JUNIOR RED CROSS SOCIETY
HEALTH ! SERVICE! FRIENDSHIP!
“I pledge myself to care for my own health and that of others, to help the sick and suffering, especially children and to look of all other children all over the world as my friends.”
During the First World War in 1914, India had no organization for relief services to the affected soldiers, except a branch of the St. John Ambulance Association by a Joint Committee of the British Red Cross. Later, a branch of the same Committee was started to undertake the much needed relief services in collaboration with the St. John Ambulance Association in aid of the soldiers as well as civilian sufferers of the horrors of that Great War. On 7th June 1920 , fifty members were formally nominated to constitute the Indian Red Cross Society and the first Managing Body was elected from among them with Sir Malcolm Hailey as Chairman.
Kongu Junior Red Cross Society was started in our school during the academic year 2002-2003 under the delighted guidance of our respected principal Mr.M.Krishnamurthy who preferred to create awareness among the students to possess service mentality. The JRC functions as per the principles adopted by Dunant, which was successful till date. The society was started with 40 student volunteers headed by 2 counselors. Now the total strength of team is about 50 right from class VI to IX. During our journey we have touched several peak of services. Members of JRC participated in interschool JRC District level competitions. We conduct weekend classes for the JRC volunteers on various topics. The youth is being trained on different topics such as fundamental principles, humanitarian values, climate change, disaster risk reduction, road safety and hygiene & sanitation. Students also develop handicrafts like greeting cards, wealth out of waste to develop their inbuilt talents. “Down the street, across the country, around the world.”
